Copper Kettle

"Copper Kettle"... 8" x 10" pastel on lightly textured black acid free paper. This original pastel by Michael Jarman is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$75.00 dollars plus $5.00 shipping and handlingIt has rained all day, so I decided to paint something indoors (as has been my habit..). I picked up this old copper kettle that I sketched before. I love how copper shines and reflects light - it makes such a lovely subject for painting. This kettle happens to be a gift to my wife from her sister who lives in Brazil.

Man of Sorrows

"Man of Sorrows"... 18" x 24" pastel on newsprint. Artist's personal collection.
When I was 15 or 16 years old, I was very inspired by the religious art of the masters, Michelangelo and El Greco. I was particularly influenced by El Greco, as this painting reflects. It began as a charcoal study, and then later I decided to lay in color. I debated whether or not to display this painting from 38 years ago! I must admit, after all this time, the painting still moves me. The Messiah came into this world as a suffering servant. Isaiah said, He was ".. despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him." (Is 53:3 KJV). And then Isaiah says in verse 6, "...And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." What a saviour, this Man Jesus!

Grandaddy's Pipe

"Grandaddy's Pipe"... 6" x 8" pastel on lightly textured black acid free paper. This original pastel by Michael Jarman is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$50.00 dollars plus $5.00 shipping and handling
When my grandfather passed away years ago, I inherited one of his old pipes along with a pipe holder. I have other keepsakes from my grandfather, such as a desk and two bookcases he made. But I can still detect a hint of tobacco in this old pipe - it is almost like it was just recently used. This essence brings vivid memories of Grandaddy. I cherish this old pipe.

Timeless Treasures

"Timeless Treasures"... 5" x 7" pastel on lightly textured black acid free paper. This original pastel by Michael Jarman is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$50.00 dollars plus $5.00 shipping and handling
Last night I gathered a couple of items from a shelf on a wall dedicated to the memory of my wife's grandfather. Ana carried these keepsakes from the Azores to Portugal to Africa, and finally to the States. As a result of all the travels, the glass and the cover of the watch broke off. The timepiece never worked again. But the memories continue everytime Ana looks at these timeless treasures.

Sewing Buddies

"Sewing Buddies"... 6" x 8" pastel on lightly textured black acid free paper. This original pastel by Michael Jarman is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$50.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
I was sitting at my drawing board last Saturday and noticed my wife's sewing tools next to her sewing machine. The clippers, so bright and shiny, next to a spool of thread and her mother's old thimble gave me the perfect idea for a painting. I especially love the pure silver thimble Ana's mother brought here from Portugal. I tried to capture the intricate engraving on the thimble. The thimble is a cherished heirloom.

Tree at Dusk

"Tree at Dusk"... 7" x 5" pastel on lightly textured black acid free paper. This original pastel by Michael Jarman is not available for purchase.
Yesterday evening my wife and I were driving home from Wilmington and I was watching the passing landscape as sunset approached. I love the colors and shadows of pastoral scenes just before the sun goes down. As we drove along I took note of a tree in a field with a backdrop of brilliant sun light striking the ground a few yards behind it. I tried to drink in the details as quickly as possible so I could paint a similar scene later in my studio. The result of that encounter is this small painting -- "Tree at Dusk."

Early Spring

"Early Spring"... 12" x 9" pastel on 90 lb watercolor paper. This original pastel by Michael Jarman is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$50.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
There is an old farm about 7 miles west of Jacksonville, North Carolina that I've noticed through the years. I always thought the old buildings would make a nice subject for a painting. Some of the barns are about to fall down now, I'm afraid. I was able to paint this pastel using one of those old barns as my inspiration. I named this painting "Early Spring" because Spring is coming early this year. In some places the grass has already begun to turn green.

Papa Luke's Home

"Papa Luke's Home"... 12"x 9" limited edition print by Michael Jarman. Original oil painting on gessoed masonite board. Each print is signed and numbered, and is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$20.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
I painted this old house as a present to my grandmother a few years ago. She had told me all about this house in which she grew up. She gave me details about how many windows there were, where the old handpump stood, where the sun set each day, etc. to help me come up with this painting. The old house no longer stands, so I was glad to preserve its memory in this painting. My great-grandfather was called "Papa Luke" and thus, the name of the painting. Many of my relatives wanted a "copy" too, so I decided to have 300 limited edition prints made.

$35.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
I painted this oil about 10 years ago when I was just getting interested in the history of the War Between the States. This scene depicts a soldier on picket duty, serving with the 18th Regiment North Carolina Troops who went to winter headquarters at Moss Neck, Virginia in 1862.

Sons Of Dixie

"Sons of Dixie"... 9"x 12" limited edition print by Michael Jarman. Original oil painting on gessoed masonite board. Each print is signed and numbered, and is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$35.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
My first oil depicting a scene from the War Between the States. I tried to capture the battle-weary "look" of Southern soldiers who still managed to display pride and courage.

My Favorite Mug

"My Favorite Mug"... 8" x 10" water soluble oil on canvas board. This original painting by Michael Jarman is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$50.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
This mug belongs to a set of mugs that my daughter gave me one Christmas. I love to drink coffee from them. I get a cozy feeling on those cold winter days holding this mug filled with hot coffee! The teaspoon pictured here is one of the few surviving teaspoons from the wedding set which had belonged to my wife's parents.

Olive Oil Decanter

"Olive Oil Decanter"...9" x 12" pastel on lightly textured black acid free paper. This original pastel by Michael Jarman is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$50.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
I decided to paint this beautiful olive oil decanter as a tribute to my wife's heritage. Ana Maria is from Portugal, and everything she cooks begins with this wonderful oil!

Blushing Pear

"Blushing Pear"...12" x 9" pastel on lightly textured black acid free paper. This original pastel by Michael Jarman is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$40.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
I have just recently gotten back into pastels. I grabbed a pear from our kitchen fruit basket and propped it up as the subject for this painting. The lovely color of this pear prompted my wife to call it a "blushing pear."

Still Alive

"Still Alive"... 9" x 12" pastel on Mi-Teintes acid free paper. This original pastel by Michael Jarman is available for purchase by emailing me here.
$40.00 plus $5.00 shipping and handling.
This is my first pastel after picking up the "chalks." I had fun playing with the pastels to create this still life. The knife was an after-thought. I almost decided to "push" the table edge closer to the apple, but instead, ended up placing the knife in front. It is pointing away from the apple as an indication that the apple wouldn't be cut at this time. So the apple is "still alive."
